There are two angels down inside the fireplace in the nursery at Stratford Hall. Robert E. Lee loved them. He made a point to say good-bye to them before his family moved. He said they helped keep him safe. When you take a tour of the Great House, you will be introduced to these two angels. No one explains though why he felt the need to be kept safe by them or who put them there. Also, as you take the tour, you will be told that the furniture in the nursery is not original accept for one piece that was left behind. It is a wooden crib. You are also not told just why this beautiful wooden crib is left behind. With Robert, himself only being around four years old when the family moved you would assume the mother would surely want to take the crib in case further children came. Such a memento, normally for a mother, would stay for years and perhaps even hold a grandchild but this piece of furniture stayed in the nursery and despite all who lived in the home it still sits, but when you turn away, in your tour of the Great House, you may not notice, accept from the corner of your eye, that the crib does not sit still all the time. Here is the rest of story that the Lees themselves would prefer not be told.

Love these little Angels-whenever we visit Stratford Hall in Virginia I like to bend down and peer up into the tiny fireplace at the Angels that gave young Robert E Lee such delight as a child. I had never heard this particular story from the docents at Stratford Hall and it struck me as a sort of entertaining Ghost Story. There were two small children who, years apart, died from falls, and a baby died at birth after Lee moved to Alexandria, so if you believe such things I guess that cradle could be given a helping hand from time-to-time.Product details
